Unite Not Divide - for Iella’s Migration Nation
Project
Project Summary
“Unite not Divide” examines the pressing theme of climate migration through a vivid visual metaphor. The artwork showcases amorphous birds and fish, deliberately crafted to resemble human forms, set against a vibrant yet chaotic backdrop. The high contrast of the inferno-like skies and serene waters are linked by an intricate, chaotic line that illustrates the connection of our global challenges.
The piece contributes to the larger Migration Nation exhibition, which examines the critical issue of climate change and human displacement. As part of a collaborative installation featuring hundreds of paper boats, this work joins other work by talented local Maltese illustrators and designers in highlighting our shared environmental responsibilities.
The deliberate use of fluid, shape-shifting forms in the artwork reflects the current state of flux experienced by climate refugees worldwide. At the same time, the message “Unite not Divide” serves as both a plea and a reminder of our collective responsibility in addressing these global challenges. The coral hues evoke warmth and warning, while the surrounding birds in motion symbolise the forced migrations across our planet.
